At CAAP Academy, we don’t just teach students how to read and write—we teach them how to think. Our English Language Arts & Literature curriculum is designed across three progressive levels that reflect a student’s academic development, critical reasoning ability, and expressive confidence.

Each term builds upon the last, following a four-term academic calendar that allows for continual growth and focused enrichment. Whether your child is building their vocabulary or writing argumentative essays on societal issues, there’s a path forward with purpose.

ELA Level 1 & 2 (Ideal for Grades 3–6)

Building Strong Foundations in Language and Expression

Term 1

ELA Level 1/2 Part A

Students master essential vocabulary and grammar rules while developing their ability to write structured sentences. Novel-based reading comprehension and basic writing practice promote early analytical thinking.

Aug 18 – Nov 3

Term 2

ELA Level 1/2 Part B

A natural continuation of Part A with more advanced vocabulary, richer reading passages, and more precise grammar and sentence-building practice.

Nov 4 – Feb 6

Term 3

ELA Level 1/2 Creative Writing

A writing-intensive course focused on imaginative storytelling, character development, and reflective writing. Great for students ready to explore expressive, personal, and narrative writing.

Feb 7 – Apr 13

Term 4

ELA Level 1/2 + SOL Test Top-Tier Prep

Tailored test prep for the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) exam, emphasizing reading comprehension strategies and written response techniques for AAP-prep students.

Apr 14 – Jun 15

ELA Level 3 & 4 (Ideal for Grades 6-9)

Deepening Language Mastery and Critical Insight

Term 1

ELA Level 3/4 Part A

Students tackle more complex texts and themes. They explore vocabulary in context, master advanced grammar, and begin evaluating authorial intent and social relevance.

Aug 18 – Nov 3

Term 2

ELA Level 3/4 Part B

More intellectually demanding, this course dives deeper into analytical reading and structured written expression, supported by increasingly challenging literature.

Nov 4 – Feb 6

Term 3

ELA Level 3/4 Creative Writing

Students refine narrative, descriptive, and reflective writing skills with advanced prompts and guided feedback. A great space for budding writers to evolve their voice and versatility.

Feb 7 – Apr 13

Term 4

ELA Level 3/4 + SOL Test Top-Tier Prep

Designed for students at a higher academic level, this course focuses on test-taking strategies, deep reading skills, and structured written responses aligned with middle-grade expectations.

Apr 14 – Jun 15

ELA Level 5: Critical Philosophers (Ideal for Grades 10 & 11)

From Reflection to Argument—ELA Meets Ethical Thinking

ELA Level 5 Critical Philosophers Part A

An intellectually rigorous course exploring authorial purpose, cultural contexts, and literary relevance in modern society. Students sharpen analytical and critical thinking skills through discussion and short-form essays.

ELA Level 5 Critical Philosophers Part B

Builds on Part A with more complex texts and layered discussions. Students challenge themselves to interpret nuance, compare perspectives, and draw meaningful conclusions in writing and speech.

Term 2

Nov 4 – Feb 6

ELA Level 5 Essay Writer

This course guides students in writing formal essays, from thesis creation and topic selection to outlining, evidence development, and logical flow. Ideal for students preparing for academic competitions or selective programs.

ELA Level 5 + SOL Test Top-Tier Prep

Our most advanced SOL prep course, targeting strong readers and writers who need strategic support and advanced drills to master test performance.

Essay Clinic (High School Students Only)

Interpreting the World Through the Lens of Literature

Writing Clinic - Part A

Students analyze classical and modern works, interpret symbolism, tone, and authorial voice, and make thematic connections to current issues. Emphasis is placed on higher-order thinking, perspective-taking, and historical relevance.

Writing Clinic - Part B

Builds upon Part A with more advanced readings and writing expectations. Students practice structured literary essays that engage in comparative analysis and philosophical reflection.
